Dr. Juell Tribute: NDSU

When, I first came to NDSU. Dr. Juell was the first Computer Science professor, I met. He was very charming. This isn't why. I decided to become a Computer Scientist. However, I don't have time to explain this.

= However, as a Freshman, you don't get into deep material, till your last year. Dr. Juell regularly taught CS 458: Computer Graphics. He has been teaching it for over 20 years. Even so, when I took it in Fall 2000. It was still a fresh and very lively course.

He showed several pictures during the course of his class, talked about lighting, algorithms for performing coloring, and such details. He was proud of his family and his step-daughter. When he talked about pictures & animated movies. He was always considering how light played and what was involved to simulate visual imagery.

= Years earlier, while browsing at the NDSU Varsity Mart in the technology store. He came in and Antz (1998) was playing on a DVD player. This was before my Graphics class with him. So, when he started closely watching it. I was confused? Certainly, he must of seen the movie before. If such things entertained him?

Later on, I realized he was studying the CGI and degree of detail of the graphics. Dr. Juell, unlike most CS Professors started as a Physics graduate. My impression of him was, he was very visually aware, of many things. Computer Science degrees didn't really exist until 1980 or shortly after. Anyone with strong math ability and a deep understanding of the Sciences, are naturally CS inclined.

Glen

Dr. Juell passed away during the end of December 2007. He continued teaching till near his death. He will be missed.
