Grouping Files: An Archive

What is an archive? The formal definition is "placing documents" into a historical record, for safe keeping.

The sense, I mean are for zip files or targ (tar.gz [gzipped]) files.

  • Everyone should learn about, use, and understand how to "collect" their files, in (zip) archives.
  • If you do? You already know, everything I'm going to write here. Otherwise, we have some work to do.
  • What are they useful for?
  • (1) Easiest way to create a backup of files.
  • (2) Natural way to pack dozens to hundreds of files, in one file, move around, make more compact, and "abstract one thing" contains all those files under (for example) "My Documents" directory.
  • (3) Again, great way to package files. Often, I create a "always install here & there" archive, for use on new PCs.
  • (4) How I apply, a lot of Open Source Software - perfectly legal! (with the above)
  • Besides awareness of directories, tree structures, and "not overlooking" hidden files.
  • Understanding a zip file also involves knowing it's verbs. What the verbs?
  • Append, Archive, Extract, Extract Here, Open (or just View).
  • What do I recommend?

= Best choice for Windows, 7-Zip: File Archiver. (open archive, extract files, extract here,: Extraction, versus add to: Archive (creation))
