JavaScript Runs Amok: Part I

= If you are aware of it, or not? Several web sites use JavaScript. Why is this not a good thing?

  • One, just becomes everyone else does it, doesn't make it right.
  • Perhaps, "having JavaScript" from just the one domain name of the site visiting, is Ok?
  • However, some web sites invoke many other services (domains). My point is? This is bad.
  • Who "ever told anyone" a web site going beyond pure HTML is good?
  • Even visiting, just a web site like Amazom. Invokes the following Domained JScript URLs.
    1. Ok, this one. www.amazon.com
    2. doubleclick.net
    3. advertisting.com
    4. images-amazon.com

  • A site like www.lifehacker.com is even worse. A total of 9 URLed JScript references, including themselves.

= Can you do anything about this?
= Why is it wrong? (Yes, I'll try to stay short.)

  1. On 2: This is how, Internet Explorer with default settings, allows everyone and so quickly opens you up to threats.
  2. On 1: Yes, educate yourself, find out what this means, get your browser to lock it down. Don't use "older browsers" or non-current ones, for never visited sites.
  3. On 2: Visiting dirty sites with Internet Explorer is "very dangerous."
  4. You'll know, when you go to such places with IE, and first your PC starts running slower. Then, a week later, it's time for "restore DVD."

What does it come down to? Knowing the site's you are visiting. If they are trust-worthy places? Personally, I don't start allowing any JScript. Unless, I need the video to play and links to click-thru.
