Looking for another alternative Office Suite? Try Lotus Symphony.
Symphony saves your work in the Open Document Format. As much as we like open-source standards, Microsoft Office and Apple iWork Pages do not support this format. Luckily, Symphony can read files from Microsoft Office and make PDF files, too. You'd be wise to save your work in Microsoft's DOC, PPT, and XLS formats if you want to send it to users who might use Office software
Platforms: Windows, Linux
Which brings up, why would anyone use this? Major reason, the ODF OpenDocument Format Standard. For some reason, the newest Service Pack 2 for Office 2007 - breaks the standard.
Until we have a Standards Czar. Perhaps, we should just email - everything in RTF?
